Final Touchstones tells the story of four brothers leaving Sicily for America in the early 1900s. The author’s maternal grandfather is the seminal figure from age three through his later emigration to a new life—a decision that forever changed his family’s destiny.
The book includes a series of ninety-two short selections in prose and poetry, divided into three sections: Italian/Italian, Italian/American, and American/Italian. The pieces stand independently; together, they relate one story.
Final Touchstones is chronological, episodic, and historic. It appeals to readers interested in family histories and those who remember their grandparents from the Great Immigration wave of the early 1900s. Now is the time to reflect on the formative years of your ethnicity.

Final Touchstones was a 2024 Finalist for the Eric Hoffer Book Award, which honors the memory of American philosopher Eric Hoffer by highlighting salient writing, as well as the independent spirit of small publishers. Since its inception, the Eric Hoffer Award has become one of the largest international book awards for small, academic, and independent presses.
This is an Italian proverb that resided on Grandpop Arci's cigar ash tray. One day, when I realized the words weren't English, I asked him about it. With a twinkle in his eye he said, "Leenda, it says, 'Water is good for you, but wine makes men sing.'" Then he laughed. I was too young to fully comprehend these vintage words of wisdom. This quote became an unexpected trope highlighted in the memoir, printed on my bookmarks, and emblazoned on my book author presentation t-shirt. (The t-shirt is maroon-merlot creation, with gold lettering.) It never fails to produce laughter.

"The episodic structure of the book will appeal to those readers who don’t wish to commit to a long narrative ... The result is a collection that will serve as touchstones for readers and help them connect to their own stories.”
